Volunteer Opportunity!! Ohio Nature Education is a non-profit organization which provides a home for more than 40 wild animals that can not return to the wild. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who are least 16 years of age, have their own transportation, and need at least 10 hours of community service. This opportunity may count as your senior project, toward your NHS volunteer hours, or to put on your resume as community service for future scholarships, college applications, and job applications.

If you are a current sophomore or a junior who is interested in taking college classes while you are still in high school, the Post-Secondary Student and Parent meeting is set for Tuesday, January 31 at 7:00pm in the high school building. Learn how you can take college classes for FREE next school year! This meeting is mandatory for students who plan to take college courses outside of Danville High School next year. A parent or legal guardian must be present to receive the information as well. We will have representatives from The Mount Vernon Nazarene University and Central Ohio Technical College to present information about it.
Seniors - Financial Aid Planning and Scholarship Opportunities
Use these three websites to search out other legitimate scholarship opportunities:
**NEW as of 2/3/12** The National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are offering the opportunity for The Looking Glass Scholarship. The application is available online. Fifteen $1000 scholarships will be given out for Fall of 2012. Students must be planning to attend either a 2- or 4-year college in the Fall of 2012 and have at least one parent with a disability. The application requires a letter of recommendation and an essay about what it was like growing up with a parent that has a disability. Due: March 5.
**NEW as of 1/31/12** The Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development sponsors a scholarship for students from low-income families. There are income requirements. See Mr. Parpart for a copy of the chart and the application. Or you can click the link above to find out the details. This scholarship appication requires a household income statement and verification form (included with application), income documentation, proof of acceptance to a 2- or 4-year college, and a completed evaluation form by Mr. Parpart. Due: March 1.
**NEW as of 1/31/12** The Knox County Safety Council is offering a scholarship to a student who is enrolling in college and studying either criminal justice, nursing, fire engineering, safety and environmental management, environmental studies, forensic science, or industrial hygiene. The student must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA for higher to enter. See Mr. Parpart for an application. Due: March 16.
**NEW as of 1/31/12** The Kingwood Herb Society has established an annual horticulture scholarship of up to $3,000. The scholarship will be offered to a student who is planning to study horticulture or something related in college. See Mr. Parpart for an application. Due: March 31.
**NEW as of 1/24/12** The Community Foundation scholarship is here! By filling out this application (type your responses directly into the *.pdf file at this link), you will be entered into the running for several scholarships, some of which are ONLY for Danville students! Due: February 21.
**NEW as of 1/23/12** Buick Achievers Scholarship Program - This opportunity is for seniors who plan to enroll full-time at a 4-year university next Fall. Your college major must be in the engineering, technology, design, or business area. You must have an interest in the automotive industry. Due: February 29.
James Kura Memorial Scholarship Contest - The Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers will award three $1,000 scholarships to seniors who plan to attend a 4-year college. A 2.5 cumulative GPA is required. Click the link for rules and the application. Due: March 2.
Have you ever served as a member of the AAA Safety Patrol? If so, you may be eligible for the AAA Safety Patrol $1,000 grant. See Mr. Parpart in the counseling office for an application if you believe that you may be eligible. Due: April 16.
Ronald Reagan Scholarship - In honor of the legacy and character of President Ronald Reagan this program annually rewards up to 20 college-bound students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship with $10,000 renewable scholarships. Due: February 17.
The Animation Career Review is seeking scholarship applicants who would like to pursue a career in the animation field. $1,000 scholarships are available - click the link to find the contest rules and the application. Due: May 1.
The William D. Squires Foundation is giving away a scholarship worth $3,000 per year to a deserving student from a low-income family. Check out the applicaton online. This one is definitely worth your time if you are eligible, because you could win this renewable scholarship for four years! A 3.2 GPA is the minimum to be eligible. The application requires your financial information from your FAFSA, so before you send it out, make sure you complete the FAFSA. Postmark deadline: April 5.
The North Central Chapter of the Ohio Credit Union League will award four $500 scholarships to area seniors. If selected to win, recipients will also be entered into the statewide scholarship competition that will make them eligible for one of five $2,500 scholarships! Pick up the application from Mr. Parpart in the counseling office. Due: February 10.
Ohio Newspapers Foundation will award $1,500 to a minority high school senior who plans to pursue a newspaper journalism career. Applicants must be African-American, Hispanic, Asian-American, or American Indian. This application requires a short essay and 2 letters of recommendation. Copies of your recent writing work is encouraged. This application is available in the high school counseling office. Due: March 31.
Best Buy is giving away scholarships of $1.000 to deserving students who have proven themselves through community service and/or work experience. Apply online by clicking the link above. Due: February 15.
Kent State University is offering the opportunity for scholarships to students who are planning to attend Kent State for majors in the STEM field such as either biotechnology, biological sciences, biochemistry, or physics. These renewable scholarship could be worth up to $4,700 per year and may be renewable. Information about the scholarships are available here or in the high school counseling office. Also, stop by the office to get information about these majors and some special programs to consider at Kent State.
Bradford Technical College in Columbus, OH is holding their annual Scholarship Day on Saturday, January 28, 2012. If you plan to enroll in one of their programs, you should attend this program. Visit www.bradford.edu for more information.
The Ohio Association of Career Colleges and Schools is giving away scholarship money to students who are going to one of their schools. Check out the website and if the school you plan to attend is on this list, you should apply. Due: April 2.
United Producers, Inc. is giving away a $1,000 scholarship to a student considering study in an agriculture-related field. Go to www.uproducers.com to download the application. See Mr. Parpart in the counseling office for more information. Due: April 1.
Cleveland State Univerisity's Enhanced Freshman Scholars Program - Students who apply and accept admission to Cleveland State before May 1 may be eligible for up to $20,000 over four years! You must have a 3.0 high school GPA and a minimum 23 on your ACT to be eligible. This saves you 30% on your tuition at Cleveland State. Visit www.engagecsu.com to find out more.
Bowling Green State University Alumni Freshman Scholarship Robert C. Romans Biology Scholarship - This opportunity is for applicants who have applied to BGSU and plan to major in biology. See Mr. Parpart for the application.
KFC's Colonel's Scholars is looking for high school seniors with financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit to qualify for the KFC Colonel Scholars Program. Awards are up to $20,000! You must have a 2.75 GPA or higher, plan to enroll in a PUBLIC college/university, plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, and demonstrate a financial need. Due: February 8.
Abbot & Fenner are giving away $1,000 scholarships to select students who have the best answer to this question - "What was the most difficult time in your life, and why? U.S. Bank is offering a scholarship opportunity to lucky seniors across the nation. Fill out the application and give yourself a chance at $1,000 for college next year! Due: March.
If you are interested in the military, but would rather attend college first, the ROTC program at The Ohio State University or Miami University may be a good fit for you. With this program, you can complete a bachelor's degree, paid for by the government, while training one some weekends. Once you finish your bachelor's degree, you enter the marines or the navy for 4 years to fulfill your commitment. Once you're finished, you will be well-trained in a career field, armed with a bachelor's degree in your chosen subject area, and you will not have college loans to pay back. Ask in the guidance office if you're interested in this program.
Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation - Go to this website for directions on how to apply for this scholarship. They are looking to award scholarships to seniors who demonstrate leadership, commitment to community, and academic achievement. Is that you?

Future Career Opportunities for Current Seniors
The Ohio Operating Engineers is taking applications for the Apprenticeship and Training program. This program will train you to operate heavy equipment that helps build roads, bridges, dams, and assist in the construction of large buildings. They are taking applications on January 23, 24, 25, 2012 and February 2, 3, and 4, 2012 from 9:00am-3:00pm. The nearest Union Hall/Training Center is in Columbus. Would you like to enter into the workforce right out of high school and learn a hands-on trade? The counseling office has information about an opportunity for you to explore - an Electrical Construction apprenticeship . Work and get paid while you train for a career in one of this field. Applications are accepted on the first Tuesday of every month in Mansfield for this area. Stop by the counseling office to get more information.
Also, the Plumbing and Steamfitters Local No. 42 JATC will be accepting applications for Building Trades Apprentices on Mondays-Fridays in April at Local 42 Training Center Bldg. at 187 Woodlawn Ave. Norwalk, OH 44857. (Must be 18 by June 30, 2012). When you go, you will need your birth certificate, high school transcript, $35 registration fee, and you must have a valid driver's license.
Are you interested in heavy equipment/crane/CDL training and certification? Performance Training Services in Columbus is a place to get your training. You can enter one of their free workshops to find out if this is something you are interested in. Call 1-888-498-6162 or come by the counseling office to look at a brochure.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will be available for current seniors on January 1, 2012.
1. Get organized. Get a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov and gather the required documents and other information for the FAFSA. 2. Fill out a FAFSA. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov and fill out a FAFSA. There are seven steps that ask about you, your school plans, financial information and more. 3. Follow-Up. Find your FAFSA online! You can go back to your FAFSA to check status, make corrections to a processed FAFSA and get other information.
You may register for the ACT test at www.actstudent.org. The Danville school code is 361 790. A study packet is available to all interested students in the counseling office.
